Content introduction:
Adopted life history approach, this qualitative study interviewed 10 “gender equitable” men, ten “abusive men” and ten women survivors with the aim to explore the possibilities of constructing gender equality, changing gender stereotypes, and preventing gender-based violence. This study also aims to understand the trajectory of expression of (counter) hegemonic practices of masculinity across and throughout participants’ lives. It is important to examine the heterogeneity of masculinity and femininity and try to understand the Chinese social cultural and political conditions in which some men reproduce hegemonic masculinity while others produce a “caring”, “collaborative”, “sharing” and “responsible” masculinity, and in which some women internalize hegemonic femininity, suffer and stay in the abused relationship, while others with more agency to manage to stop the gender-based violence in their lives strategically. Childhood, school, work, intimate relationships, and community discourses will be the core five sites for data analysis.
